For Children

Ortho for ChildrenIt's best for the orthodontist to see children by age 7 to advise if orthodontic treatment is required and if it is the best time for that patient to be treated. The first permanent molars and incisors have usually come in by that time and crossbites, crowding, and other problems can be evaluated. When treatment is begun early, the orthodontist can guide the growth of the jaw and guide incoming permanent teeth. Early treatment can also regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches, gain space for permanent teeth, avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions, reduce likelihood of impacted permanent teeth, correct thumb-sucking, and eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems. In other words, early treatment can simplify or may even exclude the necessity of additional treatment.

There are some signs that may help in prompting you to seek an Orthodontic evaluation. Observe your child and his/her teeth for these possible indicators:

  • Upper front teeth protruding excessively over the lower teeth, or are bucked
  • Upper front teeth eclipse the lower front teeth when biting together (deep bite)
  • Lower front teeth stick out ahead of the upper teeth (underbite)
  • The upper and lower front teeth do not come together when biting on the back teeth (open bite)
  • Crowded or overlapped teeth (double rows of teeth)
  • The center of the upper and lower teeth do not line up
  • Finger or thumb sucking habits which continue after six or seven years old
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Teeth wearing unevenly or excessively
  • The lower jaw shifts to one side or the other when biting together
  • Spaces between the teeth
  • When something "doesn't look right" it is often wise to seek the opinion of an Orthodontic specialist

There are many problems that may be present even though the teeth appear to be straight.  There are also situations that appear complex and daunting which may resolve on their own. Your best choice is an evaluation with an Orthodontic specialist. With a complimentary examination, Dr. Abigail can address your individual questions, evaluate your child and determine when and if treatment is appropriate.
